Theatre By The Lake opened on the shores of Derwentwater on time (only just) and on budget in August 1999.

It was willed into existence by passionate theatre lovers as a permanent replacement for the Blue Box, an extraordinary mobile theatre that had toured the country before settling in a car park in Keswick in 1975.
No one, least of all senior members of staff, knew whether the theatre would survive; but it has since produced more than 80 plays, commissioned new work, welcomed festivals of film, jazz and literature, established a reputation for high production values and found a loyal audience in the people of Cumbria and visitors who come to enjoy the Lake District.
This is the story of the first ten years of an artistic phenomenon.
