£15.00
This book provides an account of the politics in theWestmoreland parliamentary constituency of Appleby between 1660 and 1688/9
The study focuses on Lady Anne Clifford and her influence over politics in Appleby. Despite collaboration with Cromwell she led the town in support of Charles II. The Kaber Rigg plot of 1663 confirmed the town’s allegiance. Later this would be further tested by the attempts of James II to limit the privileges of the Anglican church.
Based on intensive research in the county archives this book offers vivid insights into the life of one of Cumbria’s most historic towns.
