The Waverley Route

In the 1840’s the North British Railway promoted a branch to Hawick

An ambition was to take this line to Carlisle and in 1862 the difficult Waverly Route opened. It survived until 1969 when the last passenger train ran. Now the new Borders Railway revives the northern portion of this famous route.
