Ulverstone and Lancaster Railway
The Challenge of Morecambe Bay
£13.50
Man has been living on the shores of Morecambe Bay since ancient times.
Its relative isolation was such that, though the area surrounding the bay was on the edge of several kingdoms, it was perhaps largely ignored. Over the centuries, though, new rulers such as the Normans consolidated the area and built garrisons, priories and the great abbey at Furness. They also exploited the raw materials of the area – principally iron ore of the best quality….haematite. It was inevitable that through time a railway was established to carry out the job of transport.
