The original 1994 book was published to coincide with the unveiling of the Memorial at Shap summit on the A6, this book pays tribute to the drivers and crews of vehicles that made possible the economic and social links between north and south over this old and difficult route prior to the opening of the M6

Remembered too are those that built and maintained the road, and the generations of local people who freely gave food and shelter to stranded travellers.
