John Thomson, who was born and has indeed lived all his life near Annan, has always had a great interest in local history, an interest fostered by both his father and grandfather.

He is also the author of ‘The Smuggling Coast’, a most successful history of smuggling on the Solway and ‘History of Annan Volume 1’ which is continued in this volume.
