Martha Sharp is a vet. She’s smart, sassy and, much to her mother’s disappointment, single. Her sister is getting married at the end of the month, and Martha is her bridesmaid; as a result, she needs a ‘plus one’ for the wedding day.

When a local farmer is killed, and the police say it’s a tragic accident, Martha isn’t so sure. As the reasons for the farmer’s death become clear, a story of love and revenge is revealed, stretching back nearly 20 years.

Meanwhile, a colleague takes his own life, and Martha feels she may be partly to blame. On top of that, she can’t work out what is wrong with Katie the Jack Russell, and her owners want to put her to sleep. Alongside all this there is an outbreak of TB in a pedigree cattle herd to deal with.
