PoW to Lancashire Farmer: The Remarkable Life of Alec Barker
PoW to Lancashire Farmer: The Remarkable Life of Alec Barker
Anne Bonney
£10.95
This is the life story of Alec Barker born in 1918, and who became a Territorial in 1938 in Lancaster. Called up in September 1939, he joined the Lancaster Battery of the 88th Field Regiment Royal Artillery as a driver and gunner. He was captured at Dunkirk and spend 5 years at PoW Stalag VIII B in Silesia.
He gives us a complete picture of work and life there as he remembers it, the comradeship, Red Cross parcels and letters, the wheeler dealing he did with civilians to obtain food and other items. Then the three-month winter enforced march they endured before they were finally freed!
