Copeland

The Postcard Collection

Alan Routledge

£14.99

Using postcards from the twentieth century, Whitehaven & Copeland: The Postcard Collection takes a look at the borough in earlier times.

Copeland is made up from the amalgamation of the Borough of Whitehaven, The Ennerdale Rural District Council and Millom Rural District Council and was established in the late 1970s. It takes in most of England’s Western Lake District and around 40 miles of wild and beautiful coastline long the Irish Sea. England’s highest mountain and its deepest lake lay in Wasdale. The borough also contains the country’s largest nuclear establishment and, the former, industrial towns of Whitehaven, Cleator Moor, Egremont and Millom. In addition, several beautiful villages, three or four castles, a couple of abbeys, a miniature steam railway, a Roman fort and port and a couple of Victorian seaside resorts all add to the glorious diversity of the Borough of Copeland. Whitehaven is the principal town of the borough, and was formerly England’s third most important port after London and Bristol. Alan Routledge takes us back in time, looking at the rich heritage Copeland holds for the coming generations of locals and visitors alike from its old postcards.
