Old Aspatria

Trevor Grahamslaw

£7.99

In 1843 the Maryport & Carlisle Railway Company laid the last rail connecting Carlisle to the coast.

Aspatria was merely a request stop but, in common with most Cumberland villages, the residents were fiercely proud of their town and dialect and persuaded the train guards to announce, ‘spatry loup oot’ as the train approached the platform. Today the dialect persists with the ‘Spatry’ accent proclaiming the unique character of this historic village.
