A Window Onto Late Medieval Cumbria

The Drawings in the Lanercost Cartulary

John M Todd

£3.50

The drawing in this pamphlet are a plain man’s view of the medieval countryside in north-east Cumbria around the year 1400. A canon of Lanercost Priory made some 42 interesting, amusing and sometimes ireeverent sketches in a cartulary in the library, including churches, buildings, clergy and some entertaining peasants.

Other drawings from the North of England and Scotland from this perios are rare: from medieval Cumbria they are non-existent. This unique booklet will therefore be of interest to visitors, school and university students and anyone who enjoys a slightly irreverent view of life.
