Who Shot Percy Toplis?

Jim Cox

£10.00

Percy Toplis was a flamboyant conman with a long list of aliases who avoided detection by hiding in plain sight. In 1920 he murdered a taxi driver and went on the run, shooting a policeman who tried to arrest him, sparking one of the biggest manhunts in British history. Shot dead while walking along a Cumbrian road, a jury took just three minutes to decide that he was justifiably killed by the police.

But why did his wounds tell a different story to the official version of events, and why did a civilian huntsman became known locally as ‘The Man Who Shot Percy Toplis’?
