Fate’s Ingenuity 3 –

Accidental Deaths in Cumberland 1771-1780

David Bradbury

£4.35

This, the third volume in the series, covers an even shorter time-span than the second. for that you must (as usual) blame the newspapers.

the whitehaven-based ‘Cumberland Pacquet’, was founded in 1774, and reported on a remarkable number of accidental deaths which were never investigated by the coroners. Nonetheless, the newspapers do reveal a large number of accidental deaths in Cumberland which we would otherwise not have known about, not least a variety of colliery explosions. Consider also that many of those deaths outside Cumberland occurred at sea, and you begin to understand why modern laws on health and safety, and employers’ liability , are so necessary.
