The Whitehaven chemical works
Marchon was one of Whitehaven’s largest employers, employing over 4500 people directly and indirectly at their Whitehaven plant. This book tells the story of one of the cottage industry rising to an international industrial giant and then back to nothing again, with the plant closing in the early 1980s. For more than half a century the tall chimneys of Marchon dominated the skyline above Whitehaven. Whilst some people may not have considered them pretty, to those who worked in the factory the steam and smoke pouring out of the chimneys was a welcome sight. It meant their jobs were safe and at the end of the week they would pick up a decent pay packet.
This book tells the story of Marchon, and is richly illustrated with many photographs.
