The Gentleman who Surveyed Cumberland

Stephen Matthews

£15.00

A description of Cumberland in the middle of the eighteenth century as found in the collected works of George Smith of Wigton and others.

George Smith of Wigton decribed Cumberland as it was in around 1750. He mapped the fells, surveyed the coast, invetigated Roman antiques, climbed Cross Fell and explored Borrowdale and the Caldbeck Fells. He witnessed the Jacobties ad the two sieges of Carlisle.
He was a remarkable man: an antiquarian, topographer, archaeologist, surveyor, cartographer, artist, poet, classicist and astronomer.
His work spans the gap between the age of Newton and the days of the Romantic and Picturesque tourist.
