Jonathan Otley

Jonathan Otley was a self-taught geologist, minerologist, meteorologist, botanist, topographer, cartographer, and watch-maker.

He drew the first map of the English Lakes in 1818, produced the first concise guide to the area and became known as the father of Lakeland Geology. Dr. Tom Smith has written the only modern study of this remarkable man who lived in the Lake Districtfor over ninety years.
