A Lazy Tour in Cumberland

Stephen Matthews

£12.00

WINNER LAKELAND BOOK OF THE YEAR 2013

Dickens and Wilkie Collins spent 6 days in Cumberland in September 1857. They went to Carlisle, Hesket Newmarket, Wigton, Maryport and Allonby Carlisle.

When they climbed Carrock Fell in the mist, Collins fell and sprained his ankle.

The Lazy Tour of Two Idle Apprentices is a vivid picture of the Cumberland of the time.

Dickens was infatuated with a young actress, Nelly Ternan, and determined to meet her at Doncaster Races.

Wilkie Collins chose to set his greatest novel, The Woman in White, in the Allonby area.

Those six days were very important to both authors.
