The Solitude of Mountains
The Solitude of Mountains
Stephen Hebron Conal Shields & TimothyWilcox
£22.50
This beautifully produced book is the first full treatment of John Constable's tour of the Lake District in September and October 1806.
'I have heard him say that the solitude of mountains oppressed his spirits', wrote the artist's first biographer, C.R. Leslie, in 1845. 'His nature was particularly social and could not feel satisfied with scenery, however grand in itself, that did not abound in human associations'. But Constable's Lakes tour was, on the contrary, a pivotal moment in his career as a landcape painter. In only seven weeks he made close to a hundred drawings, ranging from rapid pencil sketches to carefully considered, large-scale watercolours of what, on one occasion he called 'the finest senry that ever was'. This book retraces Constable's tour through the Lakes and presents a selection of some of the finest drawings in order of their composition. It places the tour in its artistic and social context and shows how it served as a springboard from which many of the most original features of Constable's mature painting would arise.
