Studies in Northern Prehistory
Studies in Northern Prehistory
Peter Cherry
£30.00
This is a collection of wide-ranging essays to commemorate the memory of Clare Fell, a president of the Cumberland & Westmorland Antiquarian & Archaeological Society and pre-eminent as a Cumbrian prehistorian - but by no means exclusively a prehistorian of Cumbria.
She published important work on such sites as the Iron Age hillfort at Hunsbury, Northamptonshire, whilst at Cambridge, together with papers of less importance on, for example, Roman burials. Returning to the north-west she also published items on the Bronze Age, and even a Viking spear-head, and became a guiding light of prehistory in that area. The work for which she will be most remembered was on the stone axe 'factories' of Langdale, but whenever there was a new discovery in prehistory, everyone turned to Clare.
The contributors here range from established well known names to new, up-and-coming researchers, a situation Clare would have approved of.
